after the maritime accident that took place humphrey van weyden from a wealthy family, he is rescued by the captain of the truant called ghost, wolf larsen.

as a peaceful “gentleman”, he will find himself in a violent “real world”, when against his will, he enters larsen’s service, which will turn him from an intellectual into a brave man of action.

the clash between van weyden and larsen is not only a battle in which the weaker is crushed, but also an idea war. The contrast between van weyden's idealism, who sees life as “holy”, and wolf larsen's materialism, who has nothing to worry about other than to exist, is repeated throughout the novel, making the sea wolf a work that can be read at different levels.

but london's greatest success is undoubtedly the unforgettable character of wolf larsen, which he has skillfully developed and turned into flesh and bone. Wolf larsen, reminiscent of nietzsche's concept of the "superman," is one of the most magnificent characters that a writer can create, as noted by ambrose bierce.
