Product description

Living alone in a big house is like the house settling in on you over time. The rooms expand, the silence thickens

the triangular mountain gazes from the window in the same way every day.

then one comes.

not invited but brought in.

stranger or guest? Perhaps both.

woman watches it, thinks about it, measures it.

increasingly closer.

with increasingly dangerous caution.

where does this interest end and obsession begin? Then the roles change. This time, a woman goes on a journey.

now he is the one waiting at the door.

so it is a guest.

on the contrary, this reversal constitutes the very essence of the novel. Ariane koch uses this transformation to ask profound questions about belonging and estrangement, who holds the power in the host-guest relationship, identity and assimilation, and the imposition of a place on a person – or a person on a place. The novel, which is praised by critics for its surreal and philosophical atmosphere reminiscent of kafka, questions when hospitality becomes power, estrangement becomes identity, and the house becomes a prison.

The novel, brought to our language by the valuable translator regaip minareci, who stands out with his original humor and extraordinary sentence-level writing, won the aspekte literature award in 2021 and made it to the shortlist of the rauriser literaturpreis in 2022.
