Holmen Language : Turkish Tahsin, a boarding student at one of the schools in the Bosphorus, throws a stone at Cemil, who calls him a Turkish donkey, and injures him.

Orhan, one of the school's teachers, takes the injured boy home after first aid. Orhan, a nationalist teacher who wavers between idealism and materialism, establishes a relationship with the rich and corrupt class of post-Aut Armistice Istanbul after this incident and falls in love with Vedia, who has a Western education and cosmopolitan ideas.

Peyami Safa asks a crucial question in his novel We the People, written at the peak of his writing: "What kind of morality can a Turk have if he does not believe that Turkey will survive?" Peyami Safa discusses ideas such as materialism, socialism, mandate, nationalism, which occupied the agenda of intellectuals during the Armistice period, through his characters, pointing out that people experiencing a crisis of ideals will lose their balance, and shows that man is a spiritual being rather than a material being, and that the spirit comes before matter in man
