Holmen Language: Neriman, who received oud training in the Turkish part of the Darülelhan (Conservatory), has been living in the Fatih district since the age of fifteen with her father, Mr. Faiz, who takes pride in being a member of Eastern culture that he loves.
She has been engaged for seven years to Şinasi, whom she met in this neighborhood, and who is very similar to her father and has received kemençe training in Darülelhan. The entire neighborhood is eagerly awaiting the conclusion of this engagement, which is pushing the boundaries of tolerance.
However, Macit, whom Neriman meets in Darülelhan, awakens in her the desire to live a Western lifestyle.
Neriman, living in Beyoğlu, Harbiye, begins to hate the glittering lifestyle she sees around her, her neighborhood, her father, Şinasi, and even the cat she thinks represents the East.
The two neighborhoods, Fatih and Harbiye, connected by tram but seemingly incompatible, are manifestations of a cultural and mental tension that exists within the same geographical area.
Peyami Safa, the most prolific author in Turkish literature, reflects the pains of our society's modernization through objects, individuals, institutions, and places in his novel Fatih-Harbiye, which has also inspired television series.
