Product description
A young talent, following in the footsteps of gunter grass and jose saramago, the author of freud's book sister.
goce smilevski is putting before us something brand-new, of a kind rarely found.
the european voice of contemporary literature, it enriches it with imagination, processing a legacy that has been bequeathed to us from the past, and is determined to carry its message to the future. The sentences of joshua cohen and goce smilevski remind me of the taste i got from tolstoy's texts.
the simplicity in the choice of words and the semantic depth of the sentences formed by those simple words… smilevski is quite successful in sublimating simplicity and creating strong emotions, images and thoughts from it.
-nicholas meyer our house had two rooms in the attic. In one of those rooms, there were wines that my father sold in his shop
in the other, we children slept.
this is where my childhood and the world began, at the window of this room.
the view from the window consisted of a piece of sky, a street, a row of boxwood, a canal and buildings visible on the other side of the canal, including a school with a synagogue.
dad would give anything to see me at the shul maybe.
he wanted me to be a clergyman.
my brother gabriel was born when i was six. My mother, who my father always remembered as a constantly sick woman, became even sicker after giving birth and died in just five months, on november 5, 1638.
since then, i have made it a habit to sit by the window where the world begins.
and i questioned. I questioned endlessly. the philosopher of the laugh and humane gaze, spinoza, the radical and lonely thinker of the period, left very little about his personal life behind.
a good-natured and bold attempt to portray the selfhood of that unknown man, inversely proportional to the value given to his book thoughts. An elegy written by this philosopher, who has been slandered, exiled, and ignored, but whose greatest concern has always been for humans to achieve happiness.
