What's next? In *new hamlet*, osamu dazai, a leading figure in 20th-century japanese literature and renowned for his extraordinary life, reimagines william shakespeare's misfortunated and depressed hamlet as a "theatrical novel." When shakespeare's unique story combines with dazai's autobiographical narrative, a text emerges that is as tragic as it is absurd. In his 1941 play, *a new hamlet*, dazai reimagines the norwegian-danish conflict as the american-japanese war that broke out in the same year, swapping the melancholic hamlet with himself and replacing hamlet's characters gertrude and ophelia with women in his own life. In the new hamlet, where the characters are destroying the fourth wall in places, dazai, as in many of his works, creates an unconscionable work without letting his pen stray from the path.
