the first snow of the year fell on the konduras in the morning. Latife tekin's second novel, berci kristin, begins with these words and tells the story of a shantytown nestled between the industrial district and a sprawling garbage dump.

This cult novel, on the one hand, reveals those who cling to their old traditions, customs, and tales even as they migrate from the countryside to the city, and on the other hand, it tells about those who become alienated to survive, adapt to the city, and take advantage of opportunities, those who wear out and corrupt. With an extraordinary style woven with magical stories, laments, mantras, and rhymes, with an unreserved eye and a warm affection. First published in 1984, berci kristin's tales of trash resonated powerfully within the literary world, quickly being translated into numerous languages and receiving international acclaim. This unique text, which is the product of tremendous imagination, language mastery, and sensitivity, is considered one of latife tekin's masterpieces.
