Product description

Nobel and Lenin Prize-winning author Sholohov's The Awakened Land is a major work of Soviet literature.

Having depicted the years of the October Revolution and the civil war in The Stagnant Don, Sholohov now turns his artistic sensitivity to the process of agricultural collectivization in the Soviet Union.

The coming to power of the Bolsheviks has shifted the class structures in the countryside, but has not completely dissolved them.

While the large landowners (the kulaks) resist the establishment of socialism and kolkhozes with property greed, some of the middle peasants tend to follow the kulaks.

The poor peasants and the Bolsheviks have two options to increase agricultural production: To digest the kulaks slowly or to uproot them like pests.

In The Awakened Soil, Sholohov not only tells the story of the class struggle in the village where the Don Cossacks live, but also conveys the relations of the novel's characters with the land and nature, and the sociality established through labor, in an affectionate, sometimes humorous language. It emphasizes hope, love and the determination to build an egalitarian society despite everything, no matter how difficult the living conditions are.

We present this novel, which consists of two volumes and has reached millions of readers in seventy-five languages, in Leyla Soykut's fluent Turkish.

I wonder how things would be in the kolkhoz? Would everyone feel like he did, that there was only one way out, and that was to enter the kolkhoz? No matter how sad it was, no matter how painful it was to hand over to the kolkhoz the animals that had grown up with the children and played with them in the earthen rooms of the house, would they all agree that it was an obligation? Would they accept that this love for one's own property must be eradicated, must not be allowed to take root in the human heart?
