synopsis:June 1953, east berlin.

workers took to the streets in a call for a strike against the decision to increase their daily workload. The rage spreading through the streets quickly escalates into a mass protest, culminating in an insurmountable divide between the working class and the state.

Stefan heym begins to describe these historical days known as the “eastern german uprising” from june 13, when the fuse of events was set, and takes a closer look at what happened until june 17, minute by minute.

And it does so by looking at it from different perspectives, without falling into one-sided glorification or demonization: in each chapter, it conveys what events looked like through the eyes of the german democratic unity party (sed) administrators who made the decision to increase the working norms of the workers, of the party leaders who, with some hesitation and some without, applied the party's instructions unconditionally, of the workers who participated in and opposed the call to strike, of ordinary citizens and, of course, of the berliners in the west.

in the netic, each character becomes the object of a great historical break.

The border between fiction and reality blurs in the five days of june, where excerpts from official documents and fragments from the radio news of the period invite the reader to witness history. with its technique of stream of consciousness, internal monologues given, dialogues fictionalized in the form of a theatrical text to increase dramatic intensity, and its multi-voicedness consisting of different character perspectives, it also promises literary satisfaction.
