After the first revolution that broke out in Russia in 1905 and could only be suppressed in 1907, executions and suicides became an epidemic in those dark and chaotic years (1907-1917). Gallows were set up all over Russia. Executioners were working day and night and there were no more executioners. The infamous Schlüsselburg fortress and other prisons, most of which were castles, were overflowing with prisoners. The Tsar's courts worked without a break. And not a night passed without a few young people being hanged at dawn. Thousands of people were sentenced to death by hanging, thousands were sentenced to life imprisonment, to Siberian galleys and erased from the population register. It was then that the humanists and intellectuals of Russia mobilized with all their might to oppose this terror and to prevent this arbitrary persecution. Famous literary-theater critics, newspaper and magazine owners, university professors, and famous literary-theater critics such as Leo Tolstoy Maksim Gorky V. Korolenko, famous painters I. E. Repin and Sirikov playwright Korney Chakovsky launched a broad campaign. Everyone made a contribution to this campaign. One of the most brilliant and famous contributions to this movement was Leonid Andreev's The Tale of the Seven Hanged, a work that raised the nerves of the people. This work was recognized by readers as a fierce and violent protest against the gallows of Tsarism and it had a wide repercussion. We are publishing the 2nd edition of The Tale of the Seven Hanged, first published in our country in 1972 as a reaction to the death sentence of Deniz Gezmiş Yusuf Aslan Hüseyin İnan and as a contribution to the struggle for the abolition of the death penalty, in the hope of once again drawing public attention to this outdated understanding.
