Product description

Lerner's fourth novel, transcription, begins with its unnamed narrator coming to the city where the famous artist thomas, who is also his university professor, lives to have a conversation with him.

This will likely be the last interview given by thomas, who was born in germany, settled in the us after years in france, and became famous for his works on history and technology. however, the smartphone, which is the only recording device in the narrator's possession, breaks down shortly before the interview. "moreover, when he comes to thomas' house, he can't admit this fact and the ""interview"" begins."

Thomas's associative style of speaking lends this latest conversation a dreamlike quality, where unexpected connections are forged between history, art, and literature. From time to time, mistaking the person on the other end for her son max, who isn't doing well, adds an unexpected confessional vibe to the conversation. The decision the narrator will make regarding this final conversation will plunge him into a complex relationship with thomas and max.

From ben lerner, one of the most important novelists of contemporary world literature, a poetic novel about the new world seen through our perception changed by the covid pandemic, other disasters, and technologies that invade our lives, about fathers and their (real or spiritual) children, time and distances, collective dreams, and ghosts hidden inside recording devices. Lerner's most peculiar and heartfelt book. "kevin lozano, new york magazine" "despite its subtlety, it is a book that raises the biggest and most enduring philosophical questions we face today."
