Product description

"... In the end I gave them the title of countrymen, almost like a carnival badge

they must have taken my bitter joke seriously

they spent their time, and therefore their years, copying what is called the first class, wanting to be aristocrats, when they could have made real journeys, when they could have corrected themselves in every respect, when they had the money to make the most real journeys imaginable. As aristocratic copyists, I thought, they were undoubtedly ruined in their aristocratic madness, from which nothing could cure them, for they did not want to be cured." Chopping Wood is an alluring invitation to the depths of narrative in the weighty reality of a reckoning with the ebb and flow of lived times.

Thomas Bernhard confronts himself in all his states with a dizzying transparency, while the world of Viennese artistic circles, shrouded in hypocrisy and artifice, is attacked with the rage unleashed by the suicide of a friend.

Thomas Bernhard is an openness in the breadth of the plains beyond his "disturbed" existence.
