Product description

Alan querry has not had the chance to visit his daughter vanessa, who is a doctor, since she went to america, and instead has been busy growing his business in england as a successful contractor. Vanessa and helen, the other daughter who is an ambitious music producer in london, have drifted apart over time, and the two siblings - especially vanessa, who now teaches philosophy - have never fully recovered from their parents' divorce and their mother's death. When they learn that vanessa, who has been struggling with depression from time to time, may be on the verge of a serious crisis, alan and helen realize that it's time for their postponed visit. In saratoga springs, outside new york, during a week-long visit where the snow never stops falling, members of the querry family will face some vital questions with their own solutions: why does the struggle for life demand more effort than some people? Is happiness an unequally distributed blessing within the family, or can a person learn to be happy? How to achieve the balance between living life and thinking about life? "as one of vanessa's favorite philosophers said, ""if you are to experience a truly serious endeavor,"" how should a good life be lived?" James wood, one of today's most important critics, weaves the elegant and sensitive novel good life around these questions, while also presenting an american portrait consisting of funny and unfamiliar impressions from the perspective of an old world resident.
