Javier Marías's fifth novel, The Sentimental Man, published in 1986, is now available in Spanish translation for the first time. The Sentimental Man is a novel built around the love affair between a young opera singer about to become famous and a married woman. But as the author says, "This is a love story in which love is neither seen nor experienced, only reported and remembered." The story, which we read from the point of view of a young opera singer, begins with her imagining the relationship between a woman and two men sitting across from her on the train to Madrid to take part in a performance. Later, she meets these three people at the luxury hotel where she is also staying: Belgian banker Hieronimo Manur, his wife Natalia and their companion Dato. Manur, a jealous husband, has tasked Dato with keeping his wife away from the attentions of men, but the young opera singer does not refrain from courting Natalia between rehearsals, which Dato observes and reports to his boss. The jealous husband becomes even more jealous...The Sensual Man is an adventure full of mystery and excitement as Marías moves the reader between the poles of recollection and expectation. "Javier Marías has written a wonderful story: Sharp in its psychological analysis, challenging in the development of the story, and surprising at the end. It reminded me of Marcel Proust and Unamuno."- Manuel Alvar, ABC "Beyond its literary splendor, the real sensation [Emotional Man] creates is the way it unmasks the moral hypocrisy of our time and redraws the cards on Good and Evil."- Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung "Marías's style is unique, like the discoveries he makes while searching the depths of the human heart."- Los Angeles Times "Marías simply stuns the reader." -The Times Literary SupplementProduct Name: Emotional ManProduct Code: 9789750847202Author: Javier MariasPrint Year: 2020Cover Type: PaperbackNumber of Pages: 120Paper Type: Book PaperTranslator: Neyyire Gül Işık
