summary: The mountain range extending from the taman peninsula in the northeast of the black sea to the apsheron peninsula in the west of the caspian sea is called the caucasus mountains. Geographically and politically, the caucasus is divided into two main regions: north and south. in the south, you'll find azerbaijan, georgia, and armenia. in the north, there are seven autonomous republics currently within the borders of the russian federation.

This vast landscape, shaped by rugged mountains, deep valleys, and expansive plains, has historically fostered the emergence of numerous ethnic groups. Distinguishing differences and unique cultural structures have emerged among communities speaking different languages, also under the influence of geographical conditions. On the other hand, social, political, and economic mobility has increased ethnic and cultural interaction among people, leading to the emergence of similar sociocultural structures over time.

In the north caucasus, which attracts attention with its rich historical accumulation and multilingualism, abkhaz, chechens, lezgians, avars, dargins, lak, chechens, ingush, ossetians, kumuk, karachay-malkar, nogai, kalmyk, mountain jews and many other peoples live together.

This book in your hands consists of articles by expert researchers dealing with the peoples of the north caucasus. It examines the region not only on a political historical axis, but also from a broad and interdisciplinary perspective, ranging from the impact of geographical conditions on the social structure to cultural and identity construction, from demographic dynamics to economic structures, from language and ethnicity relations to current problems.
