Summary: What exactly is capitalism? Did this word always mean what it means today, and how has its meaning changed over time? Why is it important to know the origin and history of a concept to understand today's political and economic debates?Political and intellectual historian Michael Sonenscher traces these fundamental questions, delving into the etymology of the term "capitalism" and uncovering the forgotten story behind the word. Sonenscher begins with the concept of “commercial society” that existed before capitalism and whose basis was the principle of “division of labor.” The author examines how this older concept evolved and transformed over time, merging with "capitalism," which initially relied on entirely different issues such as public debt and war financing. The book explores how the concept of capitalism, centered around capital ownership, has been absorbed into commercial public discourse, and how this process has shaped modern economic and political thought. On this intellectual journey, Sonenscher offers the reader a broad map of thought, from Adam Smith to Karl Marx, David Ricardo to French thinkers such as Louis Blanc and Louis de Bonald. This book, which we translated under the name Capitalism: A Story of a Concept by Vakıfbank Kültür Publications, aims to convey how one of the most fundamental concepts in the modern world was formed, transformed, and how it carries different meanings over time.
