Carson mccullers (1917-1967): born in columbus, georgia, carson mccullers lived a short life plagued by illness, but managed to fit four novels, one novella, two plays, twenty short stories, various essays, and poems into her brief existence. His first novel, "the lonely hunter," instantly gained fame in new york's literary scene in 1940 with "the member of the wedding" and soon after, with "reflections in a golden eye" (1941). Following these works, he published the short novel the ballad of the sad cafe in 1951. Later, the play adapted for the theater, the member of the wedding, achieved great success and was valued with the new york theater critics award in 1950. The author's another play called the square root of wonderful was also staged on broadway in 1957.
