Talat paşa, along with enver and cemal paşas, rose to positions that would determine the fate of the state... then came the major turning points: the alliance with the germans... entering the first world war with the yavuz and midilli incident... defeats experienced on different fronts... talat paşa wrote down his memoirs in berlin, where he settled after the armistice of mondros, both to tell what they did in power, and to counter the accusations directed at him. Talat paşa's memoirs of these turbulent years conclude with the defense his lawyer mounted in the war crimes trial held in istanbul in april 1919. Paşa's lengthy conversation with aubrey herbert, an employee of the british secret intelligence service, held a month and a half before his death, is included in the book's appendix to supplement his memoirs. After completing his military training at the edirne military school, talat paşa (1874-1921) became a clerk at the edirne post and telegraph office.

He resigned when the defeat was finalized with the signing of the mondros armistice on october 30, 1918. On november 1, 1918, he left turkey along with the leading figures of the unionists. He settled in berlin.
