Product description

Fowler, an english journalist living in saigon, is watching the endless war of colonial france led by communists in vietnam at the beginning of the 1950s. He meets a young american named pyle, whom washington sent to the city on a mysterious mission. "the disaster caused by the activities of this ""quiet and innocent"" american, who thought that his country could benefit by finding a ""third way"" between colonialism and communism in the region, is great."

graham greene points out that innocence and idealism can sometimes have extremely destructive consequences. While creating an extraordinary vietnamese atmosphere with vivid scenes, the complex political situation in the country intertwines with the competition between fowler and pyle for a vietnamese woman. The silent american draws attention with his harsh criticism of the united states' interference in the internal affairs of a country he knows nothing about. "in his novel, which he wrote before the vietnam war in 1955, greene had already predicted a dead end that he would soon find himself in vietnam, during a period when the us was believed to be the ""democracy guardian"" of the world."
