Product description

The young austrian officer vittorin, who was subjected to the indignities of russian captain selyukov as a prisoner of war during the first world war, returns to his home in 1918. However, he struggles to continue his life in vienna where he left off because he couldn't accept what he experienced and turned selyukov into a delusion. "on the journey he embarks on for the ""duel without witnesses"" he aims for, he finds himself in the midst of the chaos in russia, where the civil war is raging." Sometimes he is a soldier, sometimes a prisoner, sometimes a refugee.

despite the fact that vittorin is never sure of his political and geographical position in the unstable conditions of the country, he remains an unconditional adherent of his revenge pledge. The search for beyhude later takes him to istanbul, rome, milan, and paris. This novel, which takes its title from a russian folk song, reached three million readers when it was serialized in the berliner illustrierte zeitung in 1928. "perutz, who admired the ""brilliant thrillers"" of very different writers such as theodor adorno with james bond's creator ian fleming, has created an unforgettable anti-hero who falls for the games of his deluded mind in this work."
