Fyodor mikhailovich dostoevsky (1821-1881): his debut novel, "the overcoat," was published in 1846. The renowned critic v. byelinski hailed this work as a masterpiece, anticipating dostoevsky as a future literary giant.

however, although his works published later were among the literary classics in our day, they did not receive much attention at that time. In 1849, the author was arrested on the grounds that he was a member of the petrashevsky group, which was opposed to nikolay's repressive regime.

as he was about to be sentenced to death, he was sentenced to exile and compulsory military service.

with the novels written after his exile in siberia, he regained his former glory. In the gambler, dostoevsky powerfully explores the depths of the human soul, weaving together a passionate love story and a compelling tale of gambling addiction.
