fyodor mikhailovich dostoyevsky (1821-1881): his first novel, mankind, was published in 1846. The renowned critic v. byelinski spoke of dostoevsky as a future great writer in this work. However, despite being recognized as a classic of literature in our time, it did not receive much attention at the time it was published. In 1849, the author was arrested as a member of the petrashevsky group, which opposed the repressive regime of nikolai i.

convicted of treason, he was sentenced to exile and forced military service.

he regained his former glory with the novels he wrote after the siberian exile. In *the gambler*, dostoevsky powerfully explores the depths of the human spirit, intertwining a passionate love story with a compelling tale of gambling addiction.
