Product description

While sisters brigitte reimann was writing down the pain she suffered due to the tragedies of two germany in 1960, the sisters had already begun to take shape in her mind: “families torn apart, brothers falling apart, what a literary theme!” "after a year, the novel was put to writing." In 1960, when reimann's own brother also migrated to the west, the border between eastern and western germany was closed. According to the main character, young painter elisabeth, the german democratic republic represents a socialist future that is egalitarian and passionate for its own generation. Uli, his beloved older brother, has decided to move to the west because he doesn't see any hope for improvement in the country.

will a deep ideological divide between two siblings, as well as a physical border and checkpoints, enter or not? "in the german democratic republic, reimann speaks out when telling the story of the flow of life, the despotism that pushes citizens to leave the country, and the tragedy of germany from the ""inside""."

the novel, which was published in 1963, was highly discussed at that time, especially because it reflected the tensions of their own lives, and attracted the attention of young people. Today, considered as a groundbreaking classic of post-war eastern german literature, brothers is taking its place in the modern classics series sixty years after its publication.
