Product description

When Virginia Woolf wrote Jacob's Room in 1922, she broke out of the traditional mold, aiming to create "a new form for a new novel."

Rebelling against the conventions of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, she believed that the novel of the future should focus on the minutiae of everyday life, the incidental reality of lived experience, within "modern fiction." This first experimental work by Woolf, who over the years became one of the pioneers of the modernist novel, centers on the biography of Jacob Flanders from the Victorian era to the First World War.

But Jacob's Room is not a traditional Bildungsroman.

Abandoning conventions such as character development and plot, the author presents Jacob in scenes and fragments from his childhood, his studies at Cambridge University, his love affairs in London and his travels.

We come to know him through the different perceptions, sensations and memories of the people around him, and we know only as much about Jacob as they tell us.

Woolf wanted to leave Jacob's Room "entirely in the twilight"
