Product description

İş Kültür The Bricklayer Don Gesualdo

Modern Classics Giovanni VergaThe Bricklayer Don Gesualdo is the masterpiece of Giovanni Verga, one of the masters of Italian literature

Set in Sicily during the Risorgimento period in the first half of the 19th century, the novel tells the drama of a former bricklayer who "crowns" his rise up the social ladder by marrying the daughter of a poor but noble family

The noble class, now moribund, struggles for its privileges

The emerging bourgeoisie is trying to free itself from the tutelage of the old aristocracy

in the background, the footsteps of the revolutionary uprisings of 1820 and 1848 can be heard, while the opportunistic populace, who think of nothing but their own self-interest, are devoid of moral and human values

Verga conveys local experiences with great success in a concise narrative that adds a lyrical flavor to reality

Don Gesualdo, the Bricklayer, published in 1889, was translated into English in 1928 by D. H. Lawrence, one of the great writers of English literature
