epictetus (approximately ad 50-125/130): he is one of the most important and famous philosophers of the roman empire era.

he probably came to rome as a child, and has been a of the free epaphroditus, who himself was a at one time.

he attended the lectures of musonius rufus, the greatest stoic teacher of his era, and followed his thoughts.

after his emancipation from ry, he left rome upon the decree of exile of philosophers under emperor domitianus, and founded his school in nicopolis in northern greece. Many noble romans have been his students, among them lucius flavius arrianus, who did not teach his teachings like socrates, collected them in two separate texts, diatribai and enkheiridion, and ensured their reach to our day.

in diatribai’da stoa morality’s basic elements are taken up extensively, and the shorter enkheiridion is considered to be an essence that can be used as his “guide”, like the dictionary meaning.
