Pierre Corneille (1606-1684): He was born into a middle-class family and received a Jesuit education

his first play, written before the age of twenty, was successfully staged in Paris and became the first step in a brilliant career

the poet was admitted to the Académie Française in 1647

El Cid was published in 1637, first as a tragicomedy and then as a tragedy, and was staged the same year. The play about the national hero of Spain is considered a masterpiece of French dramatic writing, despite the fact that it was controversial in its time because it did not fully comply with the three rules of harmony of classical drama and treated the subject as a tragedy of two lovers rather than a heroic story

It tells the touching story of Don Rodrigo, who is forced to kill the father of his beloved Jimena for family honor, and Jimena, who is forced by fate to choose between avenging her father and the life of her lover.
