Product description

Gorky's autobiographical trilogy, which sheds light on a pivotal period in Russian history from the late 19th to the early 20th century, is in fact the story of Gorky's struggle to understand and make sense of himself and the world in which he lived.

In Earning My Bread, this struggle brings Gorky, now a teenager, face to face with the harsh reality of 19th

century Russia.

After being released into the world by his grandfather at the end of the first book of the trilogy, My Childhood, with the words "Go out and blend in with the people...", he works in many different jobs, from being an errand boy to a dishwasher, from catching birds to being an apprentice in an iconography workshop.

We accompany this child of the people at different stops of his strange and sad life journey, and meet many extraordinarily vivid characters who will later inspire his works.

We wander with him in his dream world, where he escapes from reality through books, but is ready to abandon it when duty calls
