Product description

In *the enemy* (1928), one of irène némirovsky's early works, and *the ball* (1929), she directs her sharp observational powers towards the figure of the unloving mother, a figure that also holds a significant place in her own life. the seventeen-year-old heroine of *the enemy*, gabri, and the fourteen-year-old antoinette of *the ball* are young women who face the callous indifference of their mothers in different ways. the scheming revenge plots, both cleverly crafted by gabri and sagely devised by antoinette, have been noted as early evidence of némirovsky's profound understanding of human psychology. *the ball*, one of the two works published by the author under the pseudonym pierre nerey, has maintained the interest it garnered in the 1930s in subsequent years, was included in school textbooks in the 1980s, and has been adapted into an opera in 2010 and a play in 2013. *the ball* *the enemy* product name: the ball - the enemy product code: 978625384217
