Kafka's first novel, *amerika*, published in 1927, three years after his death, was prepared for publication by his friend max brod. compared to his later works, it stands out for its more fluid narrative and its inclusion of more hopeful and humorous elements. America, as reflected through the astonished eyes of a sixteen-year-old immigrant, karl rossmann, is presented before our eyes with a terrifying fascination as an ultramodern civilization where chance also plays a significant role. This is also an america where, amidst skyscrapers, machinery, and the stark contrast between immense wealth and extreme poverty, the dwarfing of people in the face of giant buildings inevitably exposes them to a tremendous demand for productivity. This america, which the author never went to in his life and is entirely fictional, is a dream country defined by cultural myths. The statue of liberty, welcoming karl as he enters new york harbor, holding a sword instead of a torch, is a warning that discipline and violence reign in this country. Karl's uncle, who arrived in this country penniless in his time, but later became a millionaire senator, is almost a physical embodiment of the myth of starting from zero and achieving wealth.
