The factories established all over anatolia were not just about creating jobs, but also aimed at the social and cultural transformation of the workers, enriching the lives of the city dwellers, and acting as a locomotive in shaping the economic, social and cultural relationships of the city.

It was intended to establish a modern lifestyle with the factory, with worker dormitories, a school, a library, health units, recreation facilities, holiday camps, consumer cooperatives, a children's park, a cinema and gymnasiums, theatre groups, music choirs. In shared living spaces, workers and their families were taught to read and write, introduced to cinema, theater, and music, and efforts were made to instill the habit of reading books and doing regular exercise. It was a factory-based social development model that was intended to be implemented.

In addition to policies of privatization, which have laid off workers, upended their lives, and stripped them of their future and security, this model of social development has also been buried in the ground. Cities that have lost their industry, even if they have found another economic option such as tourism, have become deprived of social and cultural facilities that give spirit to the city. In a sense, cities that lost their spirit have turned to decay.
