Sia Kitap A Painter of Our Time - John Berger

Product description

The talented and distinct hungarian painter janos lavin has established a new life, albeit as a refugee, in london, where he was dragged at the end of the popular uprising against the soviet-backed regime in hungary. With the efforts of his friends, he opens his first personal exhibition in london's flashy art scene, but it disappears on the same days. One of her close friends, when he finds her diary in lavin's studio, tries to illuminate this loss by learning the painter's thoughts on art, socialism and fraternity, politics, his internal calculations, his view of life and art. The most critical decision i have ever made in my life, which was quite a few ordinary decisions at the time, was that i came to the west instead of going to moscow.

now, i find the reasoning behind that decision not only naive but ironic.

i still wanted to go somewhere i could fight for socialism. "i didn't want to enjoy the victory they fought for others," said lavin somewhere in his diary." "a painter of our time, the first novel of painter, art critic, poet, and booker prize-winning author john berger."

berger had to withdraw this novel, written at a time when his socialist political tendency was manifested, in the anti-communist atmosphere of the period.

After the great upheavals, in the beginning of the cold war when iron curtains were woven in europe, the author tells the story of janos lavin, who was stuck between state art and bourgeois art, comparing two different artist understandings from the mind of a hungarian painter living in london, and also questions the artist's values.
