Product description

Growing up always involves some kind of violence – either against oneself or against those who seek to impose their authority. Moreover, if life is stretched like a bow under the influence of political upheaval, and it takes place in the basque country of the 1980s and 90s, a time rife with drugs, unemployment, slogans, actions, deaths, and destitution.

violence becomes a form of existence, rather than personal. Absence makes the heart grow fonder presents the shocking story of a family torn apart by this climate. Amaia, the youngest of four siblings, grows up amidst a brutal world where love and fear, astonishment and anger are intertwined, painting a stark picture of a reality riddled with her father's anger, her mother's helplessness, and her siblings' disarray. When he returns years later, the traces of the past are still everywhere. He accepts that escape is impossible, and facing is the only way to survive. Award-winning author edurne portela, who knows the value of words and the of silence, masterfully blurs the boundaries between individual trauma and collective violence, revealing the anatomy of an era and a country through the tragedy of a family.
