Ahmet Mithat Efendi presents us two characters from the Ottoman society going through the adventure of Westernization: Felâtun Bey and Râkım Efendi. The book is based on these two heroes who are opposites of each other. While Râkım Efendi is frugal, knowledgeable and far from excesses, Felâtun Bey is wasteful, ignorant and loves excesses. The emergence of such a text is a conscious choice by the author because Ahmet Mithat Efendi, one of the first writers of the Tanzimat period, primarily wanted to teach and educate his readers. In this way, the author warns the readers of the period by analyzing two opposite types and what happens to them

the good, hardworking and contented person and the bad, lazy, unsatisfied person and what they face in the face of life.
