Although the work, which is considered one of the first examples written in the historical novel genre in turkish literature, was originally planned as two volumes, only the first volume could be written. cezmi, namık kemal's second novel, takes its subject from the ottoman-iranian wars that began in the reign of selim ii in the 16th century and continued for about half a century at intervals. at the beginning of the novel written by namık kemal after he went to midilli in 1877, there is an introductory section that has no direct connection with the main event, in which the depictions of cezmi, which gives the novel its name, are made with the general political situation of the 16th century.

Like the other heroes of the novel, cezmi, a real person from history, is both a poet creation and a brave young man. the novel describes the upbringing of cezmi, the son of a cavalryman, his characteristics and heroics in the iranian wars, and the events that happened in iran during his rescue of adil giray, whom he met and befriended in these wars. namık kemal here, in the person of his idealized cezmi, has wanted to reveal a bit of himself, especially the memory of his youth spent in kars and his knowledge of subjects such as horse riding, archery, and javelin throwing that he learned there.

Cezmi attracts the attention of özdemiroğlu osman paşa and wins his appreciation with his heroism in the ottoman-iranian wars.during these wars again, he meets and becomes friends with kalgay adil giray, the commander of the crimean army, and his brother gazi giray.in the novel later, adil giray, who was captured by the persians in one of these wars and was held in the kazvin palace, and the adventure of two women who fell in love with him, the shah's wife şehriyar and his sister perihan, is examined.
