About:
Kurt tank's team at focke-wulf had been working on a fast attack bomber called the ta 211 for some time. the aircraft was named after the improved jumo 211r engine that was planned to be used. the designed ta 211 was a high-wing, twin-engine aircraft, largely constructed from plywood bonded with a special phenolic resin adhesive called tego film. the only section where metal was used extensively was the pressurized cockpit.
When it became clear that the most suitable engine for the aircraft was the more powerful jumo 213, the project was re-designated as 8-154 by the reichsluftfahrtministerium (rlm – ministry of aviation), and the aircraft was named ta 154. however, junkers was unable to deliver the jumo 213 engine in time due to technical and production issues. the ta 154 was also nicknamed "mosquito" by the royal air force (raf), in reference to their own havilland mosquito aircraft.
Around this time, the de havilland mosquito, a lightweight and remarkably fast aircraft, also made of wood, was gaining fame in germany. the aircraft quickly achieved impressive success: in the first 600 bombing missions, only one mosquito was shot down, while the average loss rate for the raf's medium and heavy bombers was 5 percent.
Erhard milch wanted a german aircraft specifically developed against this plane and chose the ta 154. however, disputes between german authorities started almost immediately. the rlm, night fighter units, and ernst heinkel himself still preferred the heinkel he 219. milch made this a personal matter and spent the better part of the next two years trying to terminate the he 219 program, despite ernst heinkel's objections.
