Freud distinguishes between two types of crowds.

On the one hand, there are the short-lived crowds, which are characterized by a short-lived interest (e.g.

trends), and those permanent crowds which are highly organized, such as

the church or the military.

"Crowds of the former are, as it were, superimposed on the latter like short but high waves on the long swells of the sea." Fundamentally, however, the same psychological processes occur in both types.

Freud draws on his findings from the theory of instincts and is of the opinion that crowds are held together by libidinal bonds.

In every individual within a crowd, love drives are at work which are diverted from their original goals.

They do not pursue a direct sexual goal, but "without being any less energetic for that reason."

Freud first names the (largely unconscious) identification with the other individuals in the crowd, who all feel equally attracted to the leader, as a binding element.

The ego perceives a significant analogy in the other and identifies with him.

In addition, there is an admiration and idealization of the leader of a group through the process of idealization.

In this process, the narcissistic libido flows over to the object and one “loves it because of the perfection one has striven for for one’s own ego.” The process of identification with the aggressor can also occur, e.g.

by way of regression.
