“iv.. Almost all we know about amenhotep's "teaching" comes from a short hymn attributed to the king himself and a longer hymn found in the tomb of aye, his student and successor, at tall al-‘amarna. However, i do not find in them any statement containing any spiritual teaching, any advice for the purity of life, any word about the awareness of sin, or any evidence of a belief in resurrection and life beyond the grave. Of course, it is possible that all the religious works of the athenians, except for these hymns, have disappeared. But the truth is, modern scholars have formed their opinions and explanations about the highly spiritual nature of the religion and morality of the atenists based on these two divine texts and excerpts from them, found in the tombs of the officials at tall el-amarna. Last year, in the middle of december, while discussing this and related topics with lord carnarvon here, he suggested that i compile the known facts about tutankhamun's reign into a small book and add two or three sections about amen, aten, and the misunderstood cults of egyptian monolatry (montheism). He was particularly concerned about providing translations of some of the amen and aten hymns, with the original hieroglyphic texts accompanying the most important ones. this was because those interested in studying the subject would be able to draw their own conclusions about the nature of the hymns written to aten and determine whether they were spiritual or material in nature. In the following pages, i tried to follow his suggestion, and perhaps it would be appropriate to say a few words about his work in the field of egyptian archaeology under these conditions.
