Product description
Slavoj Zizek, today’s most important philosopher, outlines the contours of the radical politics that must be pursued against capitalism through an analysis of the film *Trouble in Paradise* and the events it depicts
he insists that liberating commitment and dedication are the primary elements of this resistance.
* “Ernst Lubitsch’s 1932 masterpiece *Bela in Paradise* tells the story of Gaston and Lily, a cheerful pair of thieves who rob the rich
viewers will recall that Gaston’s life is turned upside down when he falls in love with Mariette, one of his wealthy victims.
The lyrics of the song heard during the film’s opening credits depict the “trouble” alluded to in the accompanying imagery: In the credits, we first see the word “trouble,” followed immediately by a large double bed directly beneath it, and then the word “heaven” in capital letters above the bed.
As can be understood from this, “paradise” is the paradise created by a fully lived sexual encounter: “This is paradise / where arms and lips meet / but if there is still something missing within it / then there is trouble in paradise.”
” To put it plainly, without leaving room for any metaphor, “trouble in paradise” means, as Lubitsch declared, il n’y a pas de rapport sexuel (there is no sexual intercourse).
So, where exactly is the “trouble in paradise” in the story *Trouble in Paradise*? I must point out that there is a structural ambiguity regarding this key point.
For, as will become clear, the question imposes its own answer: Although Gaston is in love with both Lily and Mariette, his true “heavenly” sexual encounter will be the one he has with Mariette.
This is precisely why such a relationship is impossible—and must remain so.
A similar ambiguity also characterizes the fundamental political choice we face today.
Cynical conformism underscores that liberating ideals—aimed at greater equality, democracy, and solidarity—bring with them a society that is not only tedious and even dangerous but also excessively regulated and soulless
in this sense, it highlights that our only true paradise is the current “corrupt” capitalist world.
Radical emancipatory commitment proceeds from the premise that what is truly tedious is the capitalist dynamic that offers “more” under the guise of constant change, and that the struggle for emancipation remains the most daring of all dangerous undertakings.
