Product description

The best novel of the year, dreamlike and intricate, like w.g. sebald's finest works.

– alain de botton &quot

And when i started evening walks last fall, i discovered that morningside heights is a good starting point for walking around the city. Walking through crowded streets meant seeing hundreds, even thousands, more people than i'm used to seeing during the day. but the impact of these countless faces didn't just alleviate the loneliness i felt

it amplified it.

These walks fulfilled a need: they represented an escape from the tightly controlled mental environment of my workplace. when i discovered they were a form of therapy, they became a normal part of my routine, and i forgot what life was like before i started walking. Work was a regime of perfection and competence, where neither improvisation nor excusing mistakes was permitted. As fascinating as my research project was – i was conducting a clinical study on emotional disorders in the elderly – its level of detail was so complex that it dwarfed anything i'd ever done before. The streets presented a pleasant contrast to all of this.

It didn't matter which decision i would make, whether i would turn left from where, how long i would stay immersed in my thoughts in front of an abandoned building, whether i would watch the sunset over new jersey or whether i would walk in the shadows on the side facing queens on the east coast, and precisely for this reason, it gave a feeling of freedom.
