Metis Yayıncılık Remembering with Movies

Product description

If political repression and violence have become widespread in a society, if fear and alienation have become prominent in a society, if the majority normalizes this and the power legitimizes it, then the source of this is almost always a dirty past in which serious trauma has occurred. The ghosts of this past roam everywhere at any time: in crowded squares, on festive days, at large gatherings or in ordinary daily encounters. Is it possible to remember, to confront, to tell, to mourn, to heal with films? Is it enough to take up the subject of social trauma in the cinema? Considering that such trauma is never individual, what should we do as a society? Do films offer a possibility to get rid of the crazy shirt imposed on us as a society, and the embedded beliefs and ideologies? With this review, sevcan sönmez, drawing on the conceptual literature on trauma representation, traces the efforts in this direction in recent turkish cinema through individual films, and investigates what we can expect from cinema to be able to face trauma socially.
