summary: in january 1687, a major debate broke out at the french academy, which would later be remembered as the "battle of ancients and moderns". this was actually a radical transformation in the perception of the concept of time: the gods were gradually leaving the world, and people were beginning to make history and write it with a new perspective. levent yılmaz paints this threshold, this break in western history with small, delicate brushstrokes: how did western societies take their first steps into history? history, that is, putting a distance between oneself and the past, feeling the fullness of the present, and planning and organizing the future? how did western societies break away from the idea that everything that happens is a record, the future is actually a reflection of the past, history is a repetition, and tradition and proverbs are the most authentic guide? in short, how did the west become modern, westernized?
