How did paper clips enter our lives? The invention of the paper clip dates back to the late 19th century.

Until this period, pins were mostly used to fasten papers together.

The first bent steel wire clip, similar to today's paper clips, was discovered and patented by Samuel B.

Fay in 1867.

Although these clips could be used to join papers in the first place, their purpose was designed for use on fabric surfaces and patented accordingly. These products inspired different alternatives other than pins for joining papers.

Another important development in the process leading to the invention of the paper clip took place in 1877.

Paper cord, designed and patented by Erlman J.

Wright, was then being used to fasten newspapers.Paper cords, which succeeded in arousing great interest after steel wire clips, had suitable properties for bringing together thin papers such as newsprint. However, this product was not sufficient to bring together thicker papers or a large number of papers.

William D.

Middlebrook was the person who invented the paper clip as we know and use it today. This invention, patented by Middlebrook on November 9, 1899, is extremely useful, simple and functional.

Thinking that the invention would have great commercial success in the future, the Cushman & Denison company bought the patent of this product, produced and put it on the market.

Not even a year after the first paper clips with the Middlebrook brand were introduced to the market, they replaced the pins used to fasten papers in all offices and have survived until today.
