summary:With this work, prof. dr. gülsüm polat has channeled her strong archival skills into exploring the seemingly insignificant and rather extraordinary figure of harry saint-john philby, a british intelligence officer.Polat convincingly demonstrates that philby is a far more interesting, historically significant, and worthy of study individual than more famous names like t.e. lawrence.

In this masterpiece of historical research, polat positions philby at the heart of britain's world war i strategy in ottoman territories, the establishment of the kingdom of saudi arabia, the birth of the international oil industry, and even the role of americans in the entry into saudi arabia.Having the chance to read this meticulously researched and captivating book, which reveals the hidden roots of today's middle east, is truly a great privilege for readers.

”Prof.

dr.

michael provenceUniversity of california, san diegoThe british empire had trained him to be one of its most loyal servants. With his education from cambridge, he was at the threshold of a brilliant career in the indian civil service. So, how did this guy manage to ditch his suit and throw on his rags, swap london's foggy air for the scorching arabian sun, and transform into a figure that challenged the very order of things? The spy in the desert focuses on the incredible transformation of john philby, one of the most mysterious and contradictory characters of the 20th century.

During the british empire's golden age, philby, a prototypical member of the ruling class, found himself in arabia after his initial assignments in india and mesopotamia. Here, he became one of the closest western advisors to ibn-suud, the founder of modern saudi arabia.

but philby went far beyond what it took to be a run-of-the-mill political officer.

and he was also a discoverer, a merchant, an agent and, above all, an irreverent spirit that constantly conflicted with authority.

Ü.

gülsüm polat illuminates this complex personality in all its aspects by bringing together philby's works written by himself, his vast personal archive, and countless historical documents. The spy in the desert offers much more than just the life story of an agent who entered the mi6 report in the 1940s

it presents the narrative of an entire era.
