In the play "poor child," which premiered at the gedikpasha theater in early 1874, namık kemal tells the story of ata, a fifteen-year-old studying medicine and staying with his uncle, and his fourteen-year-old cousin şefika's love story. The play deals with the love between these two young people and their submission to familial pressures. The poor child deals with the major problems observed in the family, which was the smallest unit of ottoman society at that time.

In namık kemal's literary understanding, built upon significant and important concepts like "homeland" and "freedom," and social issues, there is an exception that focuses on minor and individual matters. this exception also includes a critique of the ottoman social structure in "poor child." Originally published in 1873, the play "poor child" has been adapted for publication by esra demirkoparan, who teaches turkish language courses at bosphorus university. The editing was carried out by tuğlay gençtürk demircioğlu, an associate professor in the department of turkish language and literature at the same university. This edition of the work has been prepared to be as suitable as possible to the language and spirit of the period, but also to be understandable for today's reader.
