Product description

On april 6, 2012, 11,541 red chairs were arranged in two rows along eight hundred meters of sarajevo's main street to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the siege of sarajevo by the bosnian serb forces.

one empty chair for every sarajevo native killed in the 1425-day siege.

six hundred and forty-three small chairs represented the children killed by snipers and heavy shelling from surrounding mountains.

"edna o'brien, one of the master pens of contemporary irish literature, in ""little red chairs"" traces the siege of sarajevo, one of the bloodiest genocides of the twentieth century, and examines the destruction brought by the war, the boundlessness of pain, the indelibility of collective memory, and the lessons learned from persisting in the struggle for life in the face of death." In this novel, o'brien not only depicts the step-by-step destruction and brutality, but also reflects on the forms of resistance that have infiltrated the capillaries of everyday life. Little red chairs, a tribute written to the effort to stay human even in the heart of darkness and the courage to hope even in the most painful times...
