Socrates was put on trial for seducing young people with new ideas and rejecting the gods. The trial in 399 B.C., when an attempt was made on his life, was the scene of a shocking defense, one of the first examples of the oratory genre. Among the curious crowd that came to watch Socrates' defense was his student Plato. In the aftermath, Plato penned the most famous text in Western philosophy with a speech from the mouth of Socrates, in which he remained faithful to the original spirit. The work is also a literary text with a historical background, designed to defend Socrates against his accusers and to present the real Socrates that his defenders believed.
