In 1936, george orwell lived in wigan, barnsley, and sheffield from january 31st to march 30th, conducting research there, after his editor suggested he write about unemployment and social conditions in northern england. The fifth book of the author, the wigan pier road, was written by research, on-site observation and interviews and published in 1937. In the first part of the book, which he divided into two parts, orwell describes the lives of factory workers, miners, and the unemployed. In the second part, the topics touched upon are quite clear: can these terrible living conditions be endured? can socialism change these conditions? and what are the reasons why socialism is not adopted by the very classes that capitalism exploits the most? Written with a furious, honest pen about social injustice, the wigan pier is one of orwell's most valuable and striking socio-economic works. The wigan pier road paints a picture of a decimated england, a landscape devoid of hope, and grapples with the question of how to build a more just society. –the guardian "orwell's creed was simple: truth and 'goodness' were paramount. he was a significant figure and a man of principle because he applied the same creed to his class enemies and socialist comrades alike." ” –the new yorker
