İthaki Yayınları The Representation of the Earth Europe

Product description

Hekataios' work, unlike previous narrators such as homer, focuses on depicting a landscape based on observation rather than mythological descriptions.

this approach is particularly evident in the recipe for the european shore. The geography extending from iberia to thrace is defined based on nautical knowledge

information about rivers, mountains, and people is presented in a certain order.

in this regard, periodos ges has the quality of a text of premise, both cartographic and ethnographic.

the european part of the work presents a framework for the first time in which not only geographical but also cultural boundaries are systematically set out.

Although people such as the celts, thracians, and skythians appear as figures representing the “other” in hekataios’ account, these groups are no longer just mythological or anonymous elements. Their geographical locations and characteristics have become definable communities.

in this aspect, hekataios can be considered one of the first writers who mapped ethnic and cultural diversity. One of the most significant contributions of periodos ges to the european continent lies in its effort to conceptualize this region as a whole.

europe is no longer conceived as a geography, but as an area that can be defined by certain borders. This mental mapping will become a fundamental reference point in herodotus' historical narrative and roman political geography in the future periods. As a result, hecataios presented an early account in the european section of periodos ges, combining geography and ethnography

he defined people outside hellen, leading to the drawing of both physical and cultural boundaries.

his work occupies a central place in the development of classical geography and historical writing, as one of the first examples of the transition from mythological tradition to rational, grounded knowledge production.
