The echo of ancient dreams, in the well of the modern soul. In 1927, joseph campbell, a twenty-three-year-old doctoral candidate in paris, first encountered james joyce's ulysses. This novel, both praised and sparking major debates (including the obscenity trial in the united states in 1920), captivated and confounded campbell, as it did many others. Since it's in paris, it's shakespeare, the haven of sylvia beach, the original publisher of ulysses. &amp

She got the chance to visit the company bookstore. Beach gave him some "clues" to reading ulysses, and as campbell put it, this changed his career. For the next sixty years, campbell navigated the labyrinth of joyce's works, writing and lecturing on joyce, using depth psychology, comparative religions, anthropology, and art history as analytical tools. This work, edited by joyce expert edmund l. epstein, compiles campbell's forty-year lectures, essays, and unpublished writings on james joyce's novels. it explores both the nature of myth in art and the modernity of many of them.
